Antimicrobial Products

by Shari Zeimetz on 2007-10-17 08:04:03 - Email This
There's all sorts of buzz about a new category of office supplies - antimicrobial products. What exactly is a microbe? Well, a microbe can be either a virus, bacteria, fungi, algae, archae or protozoa. These tiny little beings occupy space on practically every surface of the planet - including you! In fact, there are more microbes on and in the human body than there are cells! So, does that make us human - or just really big bugs?

Some microbes are beneficial - for example the microbes inside your gut aid in digestion. Other microbes are pathogens, and can cause discomfort, illness or even death.

If you work in an environment where you might encounter some pathogenic microbes (a doctor's office, a hospital, a lab, or if you regularly take your work into the bathroom -eew!), you should consider adding a few antimicrobial items to your list.

From antimicrobial binders which prevent growth of bacteria, mold and fungus to filing supplies, writing instruments and cleaning and disinfectant products - medicalsupplies.indoff.com has all the items you need to keep your workplace safe.

Hygiene Compliance

by Shari Zeimetz on 2007-07-23 10:22:50 - Email This

In today's acute care facilities, compliance with recommended hand hygiene practices has been universally low.  Why?  Most commonly and simply due to demanding workloads and the intensity of patient care.

A recent comparison of 34 different handwashing compliance studies in acute care settings (can you believe someone has that much time on their hands???) revealed that HCW's (health care workers) washed their hands only 40% of the time.

The average 62 seconds required for a nurse to leave a patient's bedside, go to a sink and wash their hands before attending the next patient has been identified as a deterrent to frequent handwashing.

What to do about it?
Provide easy access to hand hygiene materials.  These studies have also shown that the accessibility to hand hygiene stations has directly impacted the nurses' compliance with proper hand hygiene.

What's more, it has been proven that increased hand hygiene compliance results in a decrease in hospital-related infection rates.

The CDC recommends that HCW's are provided with readily accessible, alcohol-based hand sanitizers in the following locations:

  • entrance to patients' rooms
  • patient's bedside
  • pocket-sized containers to be carried by HCW's
  • other convenient locations

How quick do antimicrobial wipes work?

by Hugh Martin on 2007-02-06 20:23:52 - Email This

"SCRUBS" Antimicrobial Hand Sanitizer Wipes are a good, easy to use product to demonstrate just how effective antimicrobial products truly are.  Scrubs are especially useful in situations where soap and water are not easily accessible and are a great replacement for alcohol gel cleaners, which do not remove contaminants.

Now to "show you the money", as it were....

Scrubs Rapidly Kills in Seconds:

  • Candida Albicans:  (10 seconds)
  • Escherichia Coli:  (20 seconds)
  • Pseudomonas Aeruginosa:  (10 seconds)
  • Salmonella Choleraesuis:  (10 seconds)
  • Staphylococcus Aureus:  (10 seconds)
  • Streptococcus Pyogenes:  (10 seconds)

SCRUBS also remove Bio-film (and if you're in medical field, I won't have to explain that one to you!)

If you'd like to know more, view this PDF file brochure for Antimicrobial SCRUBS.

When to wash your hands

by Hugh Martin on 2006-10-02 21:41:18 - Email This

94% of all $1 dollar bills carry germs that could cause serious infections.

Lovely thought, isn't it?  That information, according to a study reported by Gojo, is a very good reason to clean your hands after handling money.

There are many times to wash your hands.  The list of obvious ones I won't bore you with.  But do you ever think about taking 30 seconds to use an antimicrobial towelette after checking through the mail?  Who knows how many hands have touched it and what germs have collected on it!

If you are serious about promoting good hand hygiene as part of your Workplace Wellness program, you might like to print out and use Gojo's color brochure about when and how to wash your hands.
